How to Play Basketball Blog – Don’t Try to Be Batman
Doc Rivers calls it “hero ball”. Some people think they have to do something spectacular to save the day. To be an effective offensive player you do not have to be Batman! You do not have to do something that makes people think you are superhuman in order to be a great offensive player. Instead of the spectacular you should try the simple. Something as simple and basic as setting a screen.
In order to help an offense run more efficiently it is important to set screens. The defense is working together. Doesn’t it make sense that the offense would work together? So if you are on offense you should look for opportunities to get people open. If you set good screens not only will you get people open but you will be open as well. The better the screen you set the more likely you are to be open. Just work hard and you will be rewarded!
Now do not take this advice and run around trying to set ball screens all the time. That is selfish. When you set screens you should set them away from the ball to get a teammate open. Set screens for your shooters to get open shots. Set screens for the post players to catch the ball near the paint. And lastly you can set a ball screen for a ball handler.
